Bzz Agent Review: Unreal Candy

This is the true story... of 3 chocolate lovers... picked to find out what happens...when candy stops being filled with junk... and gets unreal...

Unreal candy is a new product I was introduced to through Bzzagent. Unreal is all about no artificials, no corn syrup, no hydrogenated oils and less sugar. It's candy unjunked. A lot of people out there really care about that and don't want all that processed junk in their digestive track.
As a bzzagent I received a coupon for a free full sized Unreal candy product and several buy one get one free coupons to hand out to friends and family. Instead of using my freebie I decided to use a buy one get one so that I could try out more than one flavor.

I had to do a bit of searching to find this candy. I went to CVS first. No luck. Walgreen's almost lost me but at the last minute I found it displayed on a small end cap. Unreal's website states that the candy should be making it into Target stores this month so keep your eyes out for it.
I found 5 different varieties: plain and peanut chocolate candy shell (like M&Ms),chocolate caramel nougat (like Milky Way), chocolate peanut caramel nougat(like Snickers), and chocolate peanut butter (like Reese's).

I picked up two flavors to test out: the Snickers-like one and the Reese's like one. Because those are my favorite candy bar flavors given the limited choice presented me. I prefer a Kit-Kat bars or York Peppermint Patties normally.

To make this taste testing interesting I also picked up the brand name candy bars of the same flavors i.e. a Snickers and a Reese's, and invited my husband and roomie Jason to share their thoughts on the Unreal candy bars. My husband is a bit of a candy snob so I really wanted to hear his opinion.

To prevent brand name bias I had them close their eyes while I arranged pieces of the candy for them to eat so that they wouldn't know which is which. The Unreal candy is "A" and the name brand "B" in each candy flavor.

We tried out the Snickers version first:

Peter: "A" Good. A little dry. Mmm, dark chocolate. Peanuts are peanuts. "B" This one is the Snickers! Strong peanut flavor. All I can taste is the peanuts.

Jason: "A" This one actually tastes a little better. Higher grade/very good caramel. Good chocolate. "B" Peanuts and chocolate.

Both of them preferred the Unreal candy bars. I liked the Snickers bar better.

unreal (3)

I thought the Unreal candy tasted bitter due to using a darker chocolate and I missed the peanutty flavor of a Snickers bar.

Reese's version (remember "A" is Unreal and "B" is the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup):

unreal (4)

Peter: "A" Weird texture. Not enough peanut butter. Dry. "B" Wonderful balance of sweet and salty. Delicious. Perfect. Squishier.

unreal (2)

Jason: "A" Definitely not a Reese's cup! Peanutty goodness. Very, very good. I'd pay more for this. "B" Definitely the Reese's cup. Better chocolate peanut butter ratio.

So this time me and Peter liked the Reese's cup rather than the Unreal candy. I just like the texture of the Reese's cup better. It was meltier and ooey gooey.

My final verdict on Unreal candy:

If your buying them because you want a healthier, more natural product this is the candy for you. If you don't care what you eat and what your body might be exposed to then save some money and get the real thing.

I still have some candy coupons if anyone is interested. Just leave me a comment requesting one and I'll contact you to get your mailing info. First commented first served. I had a hard time getting anyone in my circle of acquaintances to take these off my hands because we're all trying to watch our waistlines I think.

A special thanks to my loving husband for holding my light for me and sharing his opinion on this product. Jason, many thanks to you too!
